•General and scattered loss of paint layer,
causing flaking. At least 40% of the surface of the murals is
detached.
•Remains of posters, likely glued to the wall
during the Cultural Revolution,
can be seen.
•The walls have shifted, creating cracks.
•Clay has been smeared on the wall, possibly
an attempt at repair of cracks and holes.
•A chemically altered varnish, darkened by
age, obscures the paintings.
•Soot, grime and dust are deposited unevenly
on the paint layer.
•Conservation needs:
–Consolidation of paint layer and underlying wall,
–Careful cleaning by trained conservators
