Report on 18 Monasteries in Kham
This 240-page, heavily illustrated report gives the results of
a 1991 architectural survey of eighteen active monasteries in
Kham. It was originally prepared for the Getty Grant Program. The
monasteries are all located within Ganzi Prefecture in western
Sichuan province. They are:
- Lhagang (Tagong), in Kangding County.
- Garthar (Huiyuan), in Qianning County.
- Tunyingchho (Lingque), in Dawu County.
- Tongkor (Donggu), in Donggu County.
- Gardze (Ganzi), in Ganzi County.
- Dargye (Dajin), in Wenduo County.
- Dzogchhen (Zhuqing), in Zhuqing County.
- Derge Parkhong (Dege Yinjing Yuan), in Dege County. This
is the famous printing house of Derge.
- Gonchhen (Gengqing), in Dege.
- Palpung (Babang), in Dege. This monastery is being
restored by KAF in cooperation with the China Exploration
& Research Society.
- Pewar (Baiya), in Dege. This monastery is also being
restored.
- Kathog (Gaduo), in Hebo County.
- Andzom (Anzhang), in Changtai County.
- Dokhor (Qike), in Changtai County.
- Lamo (Tumu), in Xinlong County.
- Jire, in Xinlong County.
- Akel (Aga), in Xinlong County.
- Mishe (Nixi), in Xinlong County.
For each monastery, information is given about history,
geographic setting, current situation, repair history, and
building condition. For some monasteries, details are included
about economic status, monk population, and religious calendar.
Photographs of each monastery are included in black-and-white
photocopy, as well as floor plans for the most important temple(s). Background information about regional history,
climate, geography, and construction methods is included in the
introduction, and there is a bibliography of Chinese and English
sources.
