Dear Friends of Kham,

Join us in celebrating Kham Aid Foundation’s accomplishments in the Tibetan year of the Earth-Ox, 2009:

Earthquake Relief.   Responding to the damage wrought by the devastating 2008 Sichuan earthquake, we gave thirteen families in Little Bawang Village cash grants of 500-4000 yuan to rebuild their homes and distributed 4500 kgs of grain among 55 families.

Greenhouses. We delivered on the promise made to hundreds of donors who supported the Ride for Green in 2006 by building greenhouses at five more primary schools for a total of ten school greenhouses in Litang County.

Wheelchairs.  In June we trucked 92 wheelchairs to Derong, Daocheng, and Xiangcheng counties where we distributed them to disabled people who could not ever get them on their own.  This delivery brings Kham Aid’s lifetime number to 1,090.

Language Preservation.  In April six teachers began pilot-testing our newly developed Minyak Language Primer at primary schools in Gongashan, Pengbuxi, Pusarong, and Shade townships.   We will print 400 more primers by year’s end to be used next year in classrooms in the Minyak-speaking part of the eastern Tibetan plateau.

Education.  In 2009, thirteen of our sponsored students graduated from senior middle school, five more from Sichuan College for Nationalities, and seven from the Sichuan Tibetan School.  T<font color="#ffcc00"

hree left school early because they aced the civil service exam and won coveted government jobs.  Eleven new students entered senior middle school under our scholarship program.

Midwife Training.  We surveyed 65 midwives whom we have trained in past years and found that their care has prevented 20 maternal deaths; the midwives have referred 200 women carrying at-risk pregnancies to hospitals for care; and they have presided over more than 800 normal births.

Books for Schools.  In 2009 we helped Tibetan Arts & Literature Initiative print and distribute 10,000 copies of the Tibetan language children’s book Little Shepherd, Little Shepherd, What Are You Doing.

Needs assessment.  In 2009 we learned that the nDrapa people are in great danger of losing their language and the matrilineal traditions that make them unique among Tibetan peoples.  About 5,000 nDrapa are scheduled to be relocated in 2010 to make way for the Lianghekou Dam.  They need help to preserve their culture.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT, MANY MORE GREAT DEEDS ARE POSSIBLE.

Please consider helping Tibetans in Kham by making a donation today!

Sincerely yours,

Pamela Logan,

President, Kham Aid Foundation
