About the village: Wayao Village (3300m) is a small Tibetan community that has occupied a tranquil green valley of the Kham region for centuries. The villagers speak the Minyak dialect of the Tibetan language and continue to live a traditional, agricultural lifestyle in much the same way they have for hundreds of years. The village consists of twenty one houses of Minyak design, four of which are over 700 years old. The village temple and the villagers’ private prayer rooms boast ancient Tibetan wall paintings which have recently been restored. Further information on the village and the restoration program is available at the web site of the Kham Aid Foundation (www.khamaid.org).
Home stays: The village has recently begun to accept tourists for home stays. Visitors can stay in the Londrup house, formerly the home of the most powerful family of the Minyak people. Guests can also enjoy relaxing in the beautiful valley environment, exploring the village or hiking local trails. A guided tour is available, offering the chance to see the historic homes and temple as well as to observe villagers in their daily activities; during the tour visitors will also be able to make butter tea and tsampa in the traditional way.
