Buddha Vajradhara
Vajradhara is the primordial Buddha and expresses the embodiment of Buddhism itself. Vajradhara symbolizes the quintessence of the historical Buddha's realization of enlightenment. The name Vajradhara means "holder of the vajra [thunderbolt]," imeaning that Vajradhara is the protector of Tantrism. His hands are crossed at the wrists; this is a gesture representing the utmost energy , union of compassion and wisdom necessary to attain enlightenment. Achieving the 'state of vajradhara' is synonymous with complete realization.
A sutra on Vajradhara reads:
I am the Buddha of beginnings and endings.
I greet the novice,
and set him on his path
And I bid him farewell as he steps into Emptiness
The great vajra balances the worlds
and the weight of Justice is upon my shoulders.
The Vajradhara image at Pusarong has suffered extensive loss of blue pigment from his face and body. Blue pigments are extremely fragile, difficult both to clean and retouch.
