A Request for Fire Disaster Relief for Dege Manigango Township Central Primary School November 26, 2004 On approximately 4:00 a.m of November 24, a building of the Manigango Primary School caught fire. The long wooden structure had been used by both of the students and teachers. Everything inside, including living supplies, clothes, bedding, food, and the building itself, was entirely destroyed by the fire. Luckily the fire was discovered early, so no one was killed or injured. The fire destroyed the students’ canteen, a storage room for the students’ living supplies, six student dormitories, and two apartments used by a teacher and a cook. The direct loss reached rmb 250,000 yuan (more than US$30,000). As soon as people realized the building was on fire, the local people including some government officials tried to extinguish the flames. But the fire was too large and hot. Also, the water supply during winter is very meager, so the people couldn't put out the flames until the building was entirely destroyed. Manigango Township Central Primary School of Dege County is located at the foot of Dege Trola (a large mountain range). This school was first built in late 1950s. There are 370 students and a teaching staff of 23 for nine classes spread among six grades. Of the students, 107 board in dormitories at the school. All of the children are from Yulong District's farming and nomadic areas. The school is one of the key boarding schools in Dege County. Some simple places have been for the students and the teachers who lost their housing in the fire. The daily teaching schedule has been resumed despite the difficult conditions. In view of the emergency, we especially request your kind help for Dege Manigango Township Central Primary School. Many Thanks! -Education and Sports Bureau of Dege CountyPostscript from From Kham Aid Foundation: If you wish to help this school through us (your donation is tax deductible), please go to how to donate. more disaster relief | kham aid home
