New Dormitory at Kyagan School, Kangding County.

This project was funded by a generous grant from the American Himalayan Foundation

Kyagen (or Jiagenba) Primary School of Kangding County serves 140 students, of which 53 are resident in dormitories on the campus, their homes being too far way for them to commute. Their situation is typical of rural primary schools in that the dormitories were very primitive and crowded. Students were sleeping 5 on one large thinly padded bed, in windowless rooms with broken plaster walls, threadbare blankets, and no other furniture.  The crowding at Kyagen was especially acute, so much so that several boys have been lodged in a dangerously decrepit old building off the main campus, and one teacher was obligated to share her room with a student. Construction of a new dormitory building was sorely needed.

In 1999 the American Himalayan Foundation funded a grant of $7000 for this project.  In May, 2000 construction was completed on a new student dormitory for Kyagen School. The new dorm consists of five rooms, each of which houses six students.

Other schools are badly in need of capital improvements like the Kyagen Dormitory. If you'd like to help Tibetan children have a cleaner, safer place to live and study, please contact Kham Aid Foundation and find out how you can help.
