OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE SPECIALLY-PRINTED TIBETAN LANGUAGE CHILDREN'S BOOKS

December, 1999

Students holding books received in 1998 from the Kham Aid

Foundation.

Summary

Building on the success of the Kham Aid Foundation's 1998 Books for Schools program, we plan to translate 6-10 titles into the Tibetan language and print 3,000-8,000 copies of each title. Then we will distribute the books to rural schools in Kham. If any organization is interested in ordering additional books to distribute to needy Tibetans, we can provide the books to you for only the cost of additional printing and shipment.

 Introduction

The 1998 Kham Aid Foundation Books for Schools program distributed 10,000 books to eighty-five schools within Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, impacting the lives of 10,000 enrolled children. Thanks to the generosity of a private donor, we're planning to continue this worthy effort. However, publishers' supplies of Tibetan language children's books were exhausted by our 1998 purchases. Therefore, before giving any more books to schools, we must first print more books.

 Plan

Phase One A committee of expert Tibetan educators will identify approximately a dozen Chinese language books that they consider useful to Tibetan children. For each book they will calculate the publication costs including purchase of copyright, translation and printing. They will also prepare a summary of the books' contents which will be translated into English. The subjects will be as diverse as possible: storybooks, science, math, vocational subjects such as automotive repair manuals, health, travel, music, art, and so forth. Problematic topics such as history and politics will be avoided.

Phase Two. Kham Aid Foundation representatives, assisted by Dr. Baden Nima (a Tibetan holding a doctorate in education), will select the final book list based on subject matter and cost. The selected titles will be printed.

Phase Three. Books will be distributed to schools by a delivery team, and by post.

Phase Four. Kham Aid Foundation personnel will visit a few randomly selected schools and villages to check on receipt of books and their proper use.
