Training Rural Teachers

Background

Xinlong (Nyarong) county is listed as a "national poor county" in China, which means that children in Xinlong are eligible for a subsidized education. But the county has a serious shortage of qualified teachers. In January, 2002, we received a request from the education bureau saying that, of the 324 teachers in the county, 82 have never received any formal training in education. They are simply local people who have stepped in to help out. They have great hearts, and want to help the children, but their teaching skills and subject knowledge is not up to standard. They need proper training.

Action!

We located a sponsor willing to pay 80% of the US$660 annual cost of tuition, room, and board at Kangding Normal University, for eight teachers times two years. This will allow the teachers to obtain their credentials, at which time they will return to the Xinlong school system. The Xinlong County Education Bureau agreed that the remainder of the cost would be subsidized by their department and the students themselves.

In fall, 2002, eight Xinlong teachers enrolled at Kanding Normal University. In spring 2004 they graduated and went to work. See below for details on where they came from, what they studied, and what they're doing now:
