Kham Aid Foundation Midwife Training Program

WHY MIDWIFE TRAINING? In Kham and indeed everywhere in China, medical care has become virtually unaffordable for the average person.  People will not see a doctor until they are extremely ill - by which time it might be too late.  For rural Tibetans, the nearest clinic may be hours or days away, and the journey can be more dangerous than the illness. Pregnant women may be embarrassed to be examined by a male doctor.  Thus, too many women suffer from complications of pregnancy and delivery that are, if caught early, entirely preventable..

Trainees listen to the fetal heartbeat.

The Kham Aid Foundation Midwife Training Program teaches a select group of women from rural villages the basics of how to look after pregnancies, supervise a normal delivery, and take care of health problems common to young children.  So far, we have trained ten women each from Yajiang, Baiyu, Litang, Serthar, Daocheng, and Sershul counties.
