INTRODUCTION

In a society with scant resources to nurture even healthy children, persons with disabilities often must live their lives in bed, and are given no opportunity to educate or develop themselves.  A Chinese-made wheelchair costs about US$100--compare this figure to the $180 earned annually by a rural Tibetan family.  Even if a family could save this amount, wheelchairs can only be purchased in cities located many days' travel away.

Since our first mission in October, 2000, Kham Aid Foundation has delivered more than 1,090 wheelchairs to Tibetans and others in Sichuan.   To do this, we have forged an international partnership. Key participants include:

  • Sichuan Branch of the China Disabled Persons Federation is identifying needy disabled people for us through their provincial and branch offices. They also organize duty-free import of the donated chairs.

  • Sichuan Holy Love Foundation hosts the field team in Chengdu, and provides administrative and logistical support.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Donate money.  Sponsor a wheelchair for a disabled person in Kham. You'll get back a photo and information about the person whose life you transformed.  Fill out and return this sponsorship form and give the gift of mobility.

OR volunteer your services.  We need doctors, seating specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and nurses for our field teams.  We also need Chinese-English and Tibetan-English translators. Generally speaking, the time commitment is 2-3 weeks, and you'll need to buy your own air ticket to Chengdu. Our next mission is planned for 2008.
