More safety tips:
When traveling in China or Tibet or anywhere, guard your cash carefully. It is best to carry it on your person, not in a handbag or suitcase. The same goes for your passport, travelers checks, and air tickets.
No matter what American Express tells you, it is not easy or quick to replace lost/stolen travelers checks in China. Since 9/11, passports are also difficult to replace.
In crowded or urban areas, don't carry valuables in a knapsack or daypack. These can be opened by pickpockets who sneak up behind you and unzip or slash your bag before you realize it.
Don't wear valuable-looking jewelry. We know of one case where a man ran up, grabbed the earrings off of our volunteer's ears, and split before she knew what had happened.
Keep an eye - and a hand - on your baggage.
